If your engine is backfiring, you probably have an exhaust leak, an intake leak or, dirty idle jets

Using a flat blade screwdriver, remove the idle jet screw (don't lose the small green "O" ring). Carefully pull the jet from the brass holder and then take a twist tie, remove the paper and insert the steel wire into the idle jet from the small end. Clean out any crud and then replace the idle jet back into the holder and insert the holder into the carb body and tighten (not too much, just enough to hold it in place)

Also make sure the rubber \"O\" ring is in place on the jet holder
